TILE PANELS: CUSTOM
I welcome the opportunity to work closely with clients to create works that are uniquely theirs. As an architect, I am responsive to the contextual design challenges presented by each project and am able to conceptualize alternative solutions for consideration.

This panel was designed for a Pittsburgh client to reflect her admiration of both chinoiserie motifs as well as the natural forms of corals. We took a cue from the18th Century Print Rooms’ fashion for interspersing prints with printed moldings, ribbons, and other embellishments to create a unified composition. The coral cartouches are suspended from decorative, bejeweled chains evocative of pirates’ treasure.
TILE PANELS: Customized panels assembled from the 2 Tile alternating matching scheme designs
Because each tile matches the other on all 4 sides, aggregation both horizontally and vertically is possible allowing great dimensional flexibility. Composition of panels can be further enhanced visually by the additions of bordering element tiles, either stock or custom designed.

“KOI” 6″ by 6″ or 8″ by 8″ shown fired in blue

Sample examples of borders and corners

“PRUNUS” 8″ by 8″ fired to client’s color choice

“TREE OF LIFE” 6″ by 6″ or 8″ by 8″ Bordering and framing tiles are available to complete the panel.

Tiles are fired in a sepia brown, then hand painted with china paints and refired for permanent vitrification. The two tile matching allows vertical dimensional flexibility to any incremental height above the base tiles. There are two top border tiles for either the A or the B tile.

“APPLE HARVEST”

“ASH WEDNESDAY” (Executed as a collage mounted on gold and silver flecked Japanese paper) These tiles were inspired by my observing of a blooming magnolia tree on Magazine Street in New Orlean’s Garden District on the day after the Mardi Gras parade

“PONTALBA” BORDER I was intrigued by the examples of wrought iron seen throughout the city, especially the work on the Pontalba buildings on the Square.
REVERSED DIRECTION KOI WITH YUZAO ADDITION

“YUZAO” addition to “KOI” By reversing the orientation of the A and B tiles, a “C” tile can be added as a replacement for the B tile. This subtle difference allows for multiple insertions of the C tile to individualize the overall panel.

LAYOUT EXAMPLE The diagram shows the replacement of the B tile with the C tile to create a pattern specific to the panel being arranged. The final layout is determined by the specific dimensional requirements for the project.

“CHINESE CLOUDS”

The inspiration for this design was taken from the sculpted middle portion of staircases over which the emperor was carried in his sedan chair (JIAO). Borne on the shoulders of multiple attendants who mounted the steps, the emperor sat suspended over the sculpted clouds. This design is planned for a sculpted surface on the tiles which will pool the glazes to emphasize the shapes.
“IZNIK-INSPIRED” 8″ by 8″ This design was inspired by the legendary Iznik tiles, however is a completely original imagining of the motifs adapted to the two tile matching scheme. The tiles would be fired in a sepia and then hand painted with China Paints and refired for complete vitrification. Corresponding borders and corners would be designed to complete any arrangement into a panel.
